Today I had the honor of speaking with Tricia Moore, founder and Executive Director of Citizens 4 STR, a nonprofit that fights for short term rental rights and helps teach others how to form their own coalitions.
Tricia decided to start Citizens 4 STR C4STR after regulations changed preventing her from being able to rent her home short term in Fairfax (C) county. Fairfax counties regulations were made tactfully deceitful and made STR illegal while some of it’s neighboring counties did not have such vague or unsupportive regulations.
Tricia is now the spokesperson for STR rights and is actively (supporting) battling lawsuits against members in the community, hoping to bring about change allowing members to be able to rent their homes under better terms.

1. Go to your local zoning and planning commission meetings to send recommendations to the board of supervisors.
2. Use Facebook groups to find local public hearings
3. Follow public officials on Facebook to see and attend their events.
4. Find out the strengths and talents of members in your community to help support your coalition efforts.
5. Every state is different but you typically have 30 days to fight an ordinance change.
6. Sometimes if your efforts aren’t being heard at the local level you need to take it to the state through your senator.
7. Scott vs Walker is a case where someone purchased property to STR in a (Home Owners Association) condo association but members of the association decided to change regulations. The investor won the right to STR at the supreme court level in the (Commonwealth of Virginia).
